Young Mexicans with a Spanish Heart
Meyerratken, Leila
National Middle School Association (NJ3), Middle Ground v8 n3 p30 Feb 2005
The author, a teacher at an Indiana middle school, describes how her Mexican ESL students took a stand and helped make a statement against racism. These students, who had a fascination with Asian culture, were indignant when they read an article about a street in Texas called "Jap Road." Adamant that the road name should be changed, the students took action. Unable to fully articulate their outrage in English, they expressed their outrage through art, and one student wrote a letter to a judge pleading for the name change. These actions resulted in their art work being published in a Japanese-American newspaper. The county commissioners voted to change the name of Jap Road to Boondocks Road in recognition of a popular restaurant that once operated there. The students learned that they can take a stand against injustice regardless of their distance from where it occurs.
