With a Little Help from Japan
Purcell, John
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v109 n4 p32-33 Dec 2009
Over the last year, the author's students have become very interested in popular culture from Korea and Japan. In particular, the class liked the films of Hayao Miyazaki, an Oscar-winning director who is considered one of the foremost anime filmmakers. In this article, the author came to an idea while he and the first-grade class were discussing the Miyazaki film "Spirited Away". The author decided that students would create sculptures with elements of Japanese popular culture and transform them into a creature they might find in a surrealist anime feature like "Spirited Away". This article discusses how the class explored art and commerce.
