"So, You're a Muslim? (Not that There's Anything Wrong with that)": A PETE Perspective
Ballinger, Debra A.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v82 n8 p43-46, 53 Oct 2011
The Arab American/Muslim population is the fastest growing ethnic and religious minority group in the United States. However, due to traditional American religious and cultural influences, the practices employed by physical education teachers often conflict with the family and individual values of the Arab American and Muslim culture. Furthermore, prejudices and misconceptions are inflamed in today's geopolitical climate. In this article, the author shares some insights from her own teaching and multicultural experiences and from knowledge gleaned through research on the Muslim culture and the religion of Islam. The article also addresses some myths about Muslims and Islam and offer strategies that teachers can use to help meet the needs of Muslim students in physical education. (Contains 1 table.)
