Using Ipad Applications to Increase Literacy Skills for Children Prek to Grade 3 with Disabilities

This article, intended to inform educators on how to use iPad apps for literacy development for young children with developmental disabilities, briefly reviews the literature on iPad apps for literacy development, examines key apps for literacy development for children with developmental disabilities, and discusses how to incorporate iPad apps into the classroom to support children's individualized education programs (IEPs). Throughout the article, the author discusses how students with autism and developmental disabilities can benefit from these strategies. The article describes one IEP team's thought processes as they worked through one particular student's IEP Goals, to choose apps and strategies to support his particular needs. Included are iPad Apps to Support Literacy for Children with Developmental Disabilities, iPad evaluation resources, and a guide for evaluating educational apps for use in early childhood education.
