Data-Based Active Learning in the Principles of Macroeconomics Course: A Mock FOMC Meeting
Whiting, Cathleen
Journal of Economic Education, v37 n2 p171-177 Spr 2006
The author presents an active-learning exercise for the introductory macroeconomics class in which students participate in a mock Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. Preparation involves data gathering and writing both a research report and a policy recommendation. An FOMC meeting is simulated in which students give their policy recommendations, participate in deliberation, and vote on policy. This exercise fosters engagement across diverse groups of students at the introductory level as it develops proficiencies desired for economics majors.
