What one can accomplish via technology seems to grow faster than the amount of time library professionals have available to explore and understand emerging resources. The author's introduction to podcasting came at BOSKONE 43, the science fiction and fantasy conference held annually in Boston. Writers in a workshop on innovative marketing were talking about the process of recording and offering samples of unpublished work in podcast format as a way of generating interest. With the proliferation of MP3 players and computer software that plays various types of downloaded audio files, the potential for using this technology in libraries is very attractive. In addition to using podcasting to create virtual library guides, the possible uses extend to creation of a virtual library orientation for incoming students (coupled with a numbered map), as well as an inexpensive guide for visitors. The potential savings in staff resources for a one-time program creation might be considerable, as the podcast would be available for reuse by students throughout the semester at no additional cost.
