The Social Cost of Acting "Extra": Students' Moral Judgements of Self, Social Relations, and Academic Success in Papua New Guinea.
Demerath, Peter
American Journal of Education, v108 n3 p196-235 May 2000
Investigated how high school students in Papua New Guinea responded to rising educational credentialism and unemployment by drawing on elements of their traditional egalitarian village identity to make moral judgements about appropriate selves and futures. Interview and observation data indicated that students referred to specific western behaviors and beliefs as acting "extra" and ostracized classmates that exhibited them. (SM)
