Managing the Collaborative Learning Environment.
Wagner, June G.
Keying In, v13 n1 Sep 2002
The feature story in this issue, "Managing the Collaborative Learning Environment," focuses on the growing emphasis on teamwork in the workplace. It discusses how the concept of empowering employees in the workplace is evolving and the benefits--faster decision making, lower costs and absenteeism, higher productivity and quality, and increased profits--of quality circles and self-directed work teams. It emphasizes teachers' need to incorporate collaborative learning strategies into their teaching methods to prepare students for a workplace where they will work in teams. These student benefits are reported: higher academic scores; better communication, higher-level thinking, and social skills; improved student behavior and attendance; and more positive attitude toward school."Successfully Integrating Collaborative Learning into the Classroom" discusses these elements of effective collaborative learning environments: clear set of learning objectives and precise directions for task completion; student acceptance and support; heterogeneous teams; equal opportunity for success; positive interpersonal skills, attitudes and interdependence; face-to-face interaction; sufficient time for learning and evolution of group dynamics; individual accountability; public recognition and rewards for group success; and post-group reflection on the group process. "Classroom Management Issues" focuses on those skills particularly important to the collaborative learning environment. (YLB)
