Theory, Technology, and Creative Practice: Using Pixton Comics to Teach Communication Theory
Meyers, Erin A.
Communication Teacher, v28 n1 p32-38 2014
As a central area of study within the discipline, theories of interpersonal communication are the bedrock of many introductory textbooks designed for use in undergraduate courses on communication and communication theory (Griffin, 2012; Littlejohn & Foss, 2010; Miller, 2004; West & Turner, 2010). Though undergraduate students are, of course, quite familiar with the experience of interpersonal communication in their everyday lives, the authors of these introductory communication textbooks point out that many express negative feelings regarding the study of this--or any--area of communication theory. The assignment described in this article aims to promote the goals of: (1) helping students recognize the role theory already plays in their everyday lives; and (2) inspire students to recognize the theoretical underpinnings of their own everyday experiences as communicators and to develop the language to explain such experiences. The assignment is perceived by students as a "fun" alternative to writing a formal paper, but also promotes deeper understanding of the theoretical concepts of the course and helps them build the visual, written, and media-related communication skills that will serve them beyond the classroom.
