The Interpersonal Competence Development Project: The Intersection of Theory and Practice
Graham, Elizabeth E.; Mazer, Joseph P.
Communication Teacher, v25 n3 p159-165 2011
Skill development exercises designed to promote the development of students' interpersonal competence have been the centerpiece of undergraduate interpersonal communication courses for decades. Research suggests that students develop interpersonal competence through exposure to and participation in skill development courses and activities. In essence, instruction makes a difference. Assignments that feature interpersonal skill improvement, the implementation of an action plan to advance the proficiency, and an assessment protocol have been notable assignments in undergraduate interpersonal communication courses for some time. This project is designed for the entire academic term. Students begin by selecting an interpersonal skill to improve, identify literature to inform and support their plan to develop the skill, practice developing the skill throughout the term, and present their assessment of their improvement alongside relevant communication theory and research in a six to eight page paper.
