Reading the Internet
McPherson, Keith
Teacher Librarian, v32 n5 p60 Jun 2005
Similar trends are occurring in schools. Lenhart, Simoin, and Graziano (2001) found that 94% of teens online use the Internet for school research projects, and according to the U.S. Department of Education (2004), "even students from low-income groups without access to technology at home seek and find it-using computers at schools, libraries, or at friends' homes." In short, more and more students and educators are using the Internet as a source of personal and school-based reading. In this article, the author examine two questions that arise from students' increased access to, and reading of, an ever-widening variety of Internet resources: the impact of the Internet on students' reading skills (and visa versa), and the ways in which school libraries can maximize students' online reading experiences.
