Colloquy on "Women and Migration: Cultural and Educational Aspects." The CDCC's Project No. 7: "The Education and Cultural Development of Migrants" (Strasbourg, France, November 19-21, 1984).
van den Berg-Eldering, Lotty
The proceedings of a colloquy on the education and cultural development of migrant women, sponsored by the Council of Europe's Council for Cultural Co-operation (CDCC), are summarized in this volume, which includes background papers, speeches, discussion summaries, recommendations, and bibliographies. The opening section explains the history of the colloquy and its intercultural approach and discusses three major goals: (1) to consider the extent to which women migrants and their daughters are able to take advantage of the social, educational, and cultural opportunities available in receiving countries; (2) to examine social and cultural factors that inhibit or encourage social and educational involvement; and (3) to identify practices that could lead to improvement. Separate sections are devoted to discussions of migration trends, the position of migrant women, the degree of their self-determination, differences between first and second generation women, and ways to bridge the gap between the migrant community and the receiving society. Specific topics include parental views of education, second language learning, job training, and discrimination. The appendices contain one general paper about European migration trends and policies and four papers concerning women from Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Asian countries settling in Europe. Also appended are reports of the working groups, recommendations, and a list of participants. (JHZ)
