Teaching across the Great Divide
O'Neill, K. Kathleen
Business Communication Quarterly, v73 n2 p212-215 2010
In this article, the author illustrates the significant role that communication plays in the success of team-teaching where her co-teacher is nearly 12,000 miles and two continents away. The author teaches business communication to female undergraduates in the College of Business Sciences at Zayed University, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, while associate professor Ken Wade teaches the Concepts of Community course to students from a variety of majors at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. The author shares that the key to successfully team-teaching students is communication, communication, and more communication--getting to know each other well enough that the teaching team shares a unified vision and can speak for the other to students in a common voice, while still sharing different opinions and perspectives. She added that team-teaching offers her students a unique opportunity to apply their nascent business communication skills and knowledge in an authentic context that emulates the demands of the international and multicultural workplace.
