In a continuation of their prior research which focused on the differences in Emotional Intelligence (EI) levels between Chinese and American business students and the academic variables associated with those scores, the authors extend their efforts to investigate those personal (non-academic) characteristics of both American and Chinese business students that were thought to be associated with achievement levels on a standardized EI test. In the first phase of this study, eight demographic, non-academic characteristics of the American and Chinese business students were evaluated with regard to whether they differed between the groups or were independent of nationality. Six of the factors analyzed were found not to be independent of student nationality. The factors of Involvement in Formal Social Organizations, Experience with International Travel, the number of Foreign Language Courses Completed, the student's Interest in International Work, the student's Number of Siblings and the student's Family Income Level were found to differ significantly for the two groups of students studied. In the second phase of this study, the remaining two independent factors of City Size and Cultural Experience Level were analyzed and were found to be associated with students' performance on the EI assessment.
