Contemplating the Communicative Value of Objects: Establishing Iconic and Indexical Object Experiences with Individuals with Severe Intellectual Disabilities
Ogletree, Billy T.; Crawford, Kimberly
Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, v24 n4 p248-251 2009
As speech-language pathologists who provide consultative services to children and adults with significant disabilities, these authors often review intervention plans that include objects in choice making or scheduling. Examples include offering individuals a choice of two objects while telling them to "Show me what you want," or prompting individuals to select an object from a schedule to represent one of their daily activities. The pursuit of these types of goals assumes that the learner possesses knowledge of the symbolic capacity of objects or that static exposure to objects will promote this capacity. This paper considers the role of object experiences in the development of representational abilities. It concludes by providing suggestions for object use with individuals who have severe intellectual impairments.
