Why K-12 IT Managers and Administrators Are Embracing the Intel-Based Mac
Technology & Learning, v27 n11 p55 Jun 2007
Over the past year, Apple has dramatically increased its share of the school computer marketplace--especially in the category of notebook computers. A recent study conducted by Grunwald Associates and Rockman et al. reports that one of the major reasons for this growth is Apple's introduction of the Intel processor to the entire line of Mac computers. Based on interviews with administrators, technology managers, and support staff in five school districts of varying sizes, locations, and backgrounds, the report's authors concluded that the Intel-based Mac offers considerable benefits in the areas of administrative efficiency and ease of implementation for IT departments. Its multi-platform functionality has the flexibility to support essential administrative tasks, regardless of which platform an application requires. In addition, the Mac has proven to be easy to use and a fast, reliable, and stable computer that: (1) Allows school and district leaders to accomplish administrative tasks more efficiently; (2) Decreases setup, deployment, and maintenance problems; (3) Increases time available for teachers to learn digital authoring tools; and (4) Increases technology support staff productivity. If time is money, the Intel-based Mac promises to reduce the overall cost of ownership through its benefits, efficiencies, and ease of implementation. (Contains 3 online resources.)
