A study investigated whether the computer anxiety of novice users would be reduced more with graphic user interfaces than with command line interfaces. Computers have become an integral part of communication research, and undergraduates are being required to take research courses that necessitate the use of computers. Forty-five students enrolled in an undergraduate communication research course at a large urban university in the Midwest participated in the study. Subjects ran a computer program using either command line or graphic interfaces. Pre- and post-tests measured computer anxiety. Results indicated that interface does not have an effect on the level of computer anxiety for novice users. Results further indicated that there seems to be no simple solution to computer anxiety for novice users. The use of graphic user interface, no matter which platform is employed, does not reduce novice user anxiety. (One table is included; 17 references are attached.) (PRA)
