Student death on college campuses is a reality that occurs all too often, and dealing with the aftermath of a student's death is something that all higher education administrators must be prepared to address. Given the proliferation of media outlets, breaking news reports, and instant technologies used by students today, news about these deaths can spread quickly. Regardless of whether the death is accidental, intentional, or violent, emotions run high for all persons involved with the victim as well as within the larger college community. Understanding the impact of these emotions is essential, and administrators must address the aftermath in both caring and rational ways. This article provides suggestions for practice in the case of a student's death as well as a rationale for preparing for such an event before it happens. (Contains 2 exhibits.)
