Developing and Assessing Multicultural Competence with a Focus on Culture and Ethnicity
ter Maat, Mercedes B.
Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, v28 n1 p4-10 2011
The search for culturally appropriate art therapy practice has historically focused on personal exploration and the infusion of a multicultural perspective in academic and applied experiences. The purpose of this article is to strengthen awareness of the personal and professional competencies necessary for culturally responsible practice. Three dimensions of cultural competency are discussed (awareness, knowledge, and skills) as well as three instruments measuring such competencies. Although the focus here is on racial and ethnic awareness, information is offered that can guide art therapists when working with all individuals whose perspectives, backgrounds, and life experiences differ from their own.
