Administrative Support and Alternatively Certified Teachers: A Mixed Methods Study on New Teacher Support and Retention
Anderson, Erin M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene University
A non-experimental study was conducted to examine the perceived administrative support needs of alternatively certified teachers and determine their impact on teacher retention. The study sought to identify the most valued administrative support needs of alternatively-certified teachers; to compare those needs by gender and tier teaching level; and to compare actual support needs to perceptions of those needs being met at the school level. Findings indicated that emotional support is the most valued support need of alternatively-certified teachers. Elementary teachers valued informational support more than high school teachers. No statistical significance was found between administrative support need received and teachers' likelihood to leave the teaching profession or their current schools.
