The Clubbers' Guide: Ideas for Science/STEM Clubs from... Books!
Howarth, Sue
School Science Review, v95 n350 p20-24 Sep 2013
The internet is certainly a speedy way of finding plenty of information when searching for ideas for science or other STEM clubs. There are many helpful websites, such as that of the British Science Association, with their "free project resources" pages, which include "pick up and run" projects that can be linked to CREST Awards (see Websites). Good old-fashioned books, however, still have a place when looking for resources. Books can be better written, more carefully edited, and contain higher quality material than some online offerings. Books are also less ephemeral than websites, software, and hardware, so great ideas may be returned to, year after year, by simply picking a favourite book from a shelf. With this in mind, an assortment of books that could prove helpful when looking for activities and projects is listed in this article. The emphasis is on usefulness for planning engaging activities for science clubs, but some will also be useful for clubs relating to technology, engineering, and math. Some of the books also contain ideas that could be used to enhance lesson content. The only criteria used in choosing this sample of books (there are many more books that could have been listed) were that they are still in print or copies are easily available, they are also reasonably recent. (Contains 3 online resources.)
