Assessing the Gap: The MBA and Information Technology Management Knowledge
Murphy, John B.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Stevens Institute of Technology
One of the most prevalent themes for managers in nearly all industries is the impact of Information Technology on the organization's value chain. Direct and indirect IT costs comprise a significant portion of operating expenses for most businesses and constitute an estimated 50% of all capital expenditures. Understanding whether and to what extent Information Technology impacts the effectiveness of the organization is a critical management responsibility that pervades organizational strategy and operations. Without a practical grounding in the management of IT, there is the potential that organizations will significantly underperform. Absent this grounding, current and future managers need to re-invent, often through trial and error, knowledge that has already been developed, tested, refined and proven in many organizations and across many industries. This comes at a significant opportunity cost to the firm. This research links MBA Information Technology management content at 70 top-ranked US Business Schools with an analysis of business manager's feedback on specific IT Management knowledge topics to create a consumer-supplier-market view of the needs of Managers with respect to Information Technology Management. Based on previous literature and fieldwork, it is intended to provide a method of assessing the importance of IT Management knowledge topics and reliably predicting manager's intent to use them in their work. The expected contribution of this research is to develop a process of ongoing assessment of IT Management topics of importance to managers and MBAs to increase the value of academic MBA programs to management practice in industry and vice-versa.
