Easy Absolute Values? Absolutely
Taylor, Sharon E.; Mittag, Kathleen Cage
Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, v21 n1 p49-52 Aug 2015
The authors teach a problem-solving course for preservice middle-grades education majors that includes concepts dealing with absolute-value computations, equations, and inequalities. Many of these students like mathematics and plan to teach it, so they are adept at symbolic manipulations. Getting them to think differently about a concept that they are familiar with is sometimes quite challenging. By using the approach described here, students gain a much better understanding of absolute-value equations and inequalities.
