This manual was prepared by experienced wastewater collection system workers to provide a home study course to develop new qualified workers and expand the abilities of existing workers. This volume contains information on operational strategies for the activated sludge process and the use of pure oxygen, the handling and disposal of solids, advanced treatment processes for the removal of solids and nutrients from secondary effluents, monitoring and treating industrial wastes, and maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation and support systems. Ten chapters examine the following topics: (1) odor control, (2) activated sludge, (3) solids handling and disposal, (4) solids removal from secondary effluents, (5) phosphorus removal, (6) wastewater reclamation, (7) instrumentation, (8) industrial waste monitoring, (9) industrial waste treatment, and (10) support systems.
