Since the late 1960's many countries have been attempting to resolve environmental problems not only by preventing pollution, but through research and educational programs and by managing the environment. This directory focuses on these programs and includes over 4,800 organizations located throughout the world: educational institutions; field stations or laboratories; foundations; government organizations (federal, state, and local); industrial, commercial, or professional organizations; and research institutes. The main section of the directory is arranged by subject: biology, chemistry, engineering, geology, physics, and social sciences. Organizations involved in multidisciplinary research are listed separately in the Interdisciplinary Section. Each entry in the main section includes the following information, if available: name and address, the name of the director, the size of the staff, the general environment being studied, and the specific interests being studied.
