This curriculum guide, keyed to the building maintenance competency profile developed by industry and education professionals, provides three units on carpentry and finishing procedures. The first unit, Exterior Carpentry, contains the following lessons: carpentry safety procedures, ladder and scaffolding safety, door installation/repair, door-operating hardware, window installation/repair, window cleaning, exterior siding, repairing exterior trim, repairing roof flashing, repair/replace roof shingles, replacing downspouts and guttering, and installing weatherproofing. Unit 2, Interior Carpentry, covers the following topics: interior finishing, repair/replace interior wall paneling, floor covering, ceiling systems, insulation, interior finishing, install or replace ceramic tile, wall framing, and clean and finish floors and walls. Unit 3, Finishing Procedures, includes four lessons: safety; prepare surface for finish; select correct finishing materials; and prepare, apply, and store finishing materials. Each lesson includes some or all of the following color-coded components: performance objectives, information sheets, transparency masters, handouts, assignment sheets, job sheets, lesson tests, and answer key.
