Boosting Black Academic Achievement and AP Enrollments
Saunders, Terrie; Maloney, Kathy
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n6 p54-57 Feb 2005
Minority students were about 25% of the student population at Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1995. But the composition of its honors and challenge classes did not reflect this diversity: Few minority students were taking challenge classes as underclassmen and even fewer were taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses as seniors. This paper describes the Minority Scholars program that was created and implemented in 1996 to address this discrepancy. Now in its ninth year, Minority Scholars has increased the number of black, American Indian, and Hispanic students in AP classes. The Minority Scholars program has a variety of support services, including units on college planning, test taking, resume writing, leadership, and time management. Students in Minority Scholars participate in such volunteer activities as food drives and tutoring English as a Second Language (ESL) students. They also have the opportunity for career exploration, including meeting guest speakers who represent their career interests.
