The Indian Environmental Society, in association with the International Programme on Environmental Management Education, organized two seminars on World Environment Day and Environmental Impact Assessment during June 1980. A large number of papers on various aspects of environmental management were presented during the seminars. The papers addressed a wide range of issues including the environmental situations in India, social forestry, environmental impact assessment, problems of mining, and other various related problems. Titles of these selected papers include: "Environmental Impact Assessment as a Tool for Environmental Quality Management"; "Environmental Situation in India"; "Some Socio-Economic Issues in Social Forestry"; "Population, Employment and Environment"; "Marine and Coastal Environmental Management"; "Environmental Problems due to Mining in the Jharia Coalfield"; "Irrigation and the Environment"; and "The Silent Valley Hydroelectric Project -- a Draft Environmental Impact Assessment."
