ICT and Literacy: Who Benefits? Experience from Zambia and India
Farrell, Glen, Ed.
Commonwealth of Learning
This is the final report of a three-and-a-half-year project that pilot tested the usefulness of various information and communication technology (ICT) applications in the provision of literacy programmes. The report is based on data collected by in-country evaluators during the term of the project as well as from a follow-up study a year later. Key findings reported include: (1) ICTs can be used creatively to produce locally relevant learning materials; (2) Learning to use the equipment is both easy and motivating for learners; and (3) Sustainability of ICT access centres is significantly enhanced when local communities are enabled to take responsibility for managing them and when use is shared with other community agencies. The monograph includes: (1) The COLLIT Project: Development and Management; (2) Understanding the Context; (3) The Community Literacy Learning Centres: Development and Operation; (4) The Learners; (5) The Literacy Curriculum and Teaching Approach; (6) The Cost of Developing and Operating Literacy Learning Centres; (7) The Project Impact; and (8) Summary Comments. A President's Message (Sir John Daniel) , Foreword (Alan Rogers), Preface and Epilogue are also included. (Contains 7 notes and 9 tables.) [The Commonwealth of Learning Literacy Project (COLLIT) was carried out with funding from the UK Department for International Development.]
