Strategies for Supporting Inclusive Education for Students with Disabilities
Mumford, Vincent E.; Chandler, Judy Potter
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v22 n5 p10-15 May-Jun 2009
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) of 2004 supports equitable access to educational opportunities for all children who have disabilities. IDEA requires that students who receive services for special needs receive a free appropriate public education, and have access to the general education curriculum, which includes physical education. Like other classroom teachers, physical educators face the challenge of teaching students with a wide range of abilities on a daily basis. However, in classrooms where students with learning disabilities (LD) are included, the challenge is even more magnified. The focus of this article is to present information and strategies for teachers to support students with LD in physical education classrooms. The authors present a discussion of teacher characteristics which support inclusive physical education classrooms. Next, they discuss strategies that support successful inclusion of LD students. The article concludes by offering recommendations for creating a more inclusive physical education classroom.
