Buddhist Education in Sichuan
Long, Darui
Educational Philosophy and Theory, v34 n2 p185-206 May 2002
This paper is devoted to Buddhist education in Sichuan Province with a focus on Venerable Longlian's temple. It deals with the historical development of Chinese Buddhist education and makes statistic analysis of the available data. Venerable Longlian established the Sichuan Buddhist Institute for Nuns in the 1980s. It was the first modern school in China for Buddhist nuns. Venerable Longlian, with utter devotion to Buddhist education, has always kept a low profile for this institute. The school, housed in a temple named Tiexiang Si (Iron Statue Ternpie) in the southern outskirts of Chengdu, is not open to the public for pilgrimage, or Buddhist services for donations, or incense. This essay aims to provide more information about the above-mentioned Buddhist institute and its unique characteristics. It is divided into five parts: (1) Historical Perspective of Chinese Buddhist Education and its Influence in General; (2) Sichuan Buddhist Nunnery Under Venerable Longlian; (3) Ordination of Buddhist Nuns; (4) Buddhist Education for Monks and Tibetans; and (5) Existing Problems.
