Contributions to Music Education, v38 n2 p29-42 2011
The purpose of this study was to examine how I Am A Dreamer Musician Program (IDMP) affected academic self-concept and self-esteem of middle school students in low-income communities. During the seven weeks of the weekly music workshops, students participated in different musical activities including playing percussion instruments, singing, improvisation, jamming, group dancing, and dynamic and rhythmic exploration. The assessment of IDMP had both naturalistic and objective-oriented modes, including the modified Self-Description Questionnaire (SDQ-I), a parent survey, and student interview. Findings demonstrated that there were significant differences in General school self-concept and Math self-concept from pretest to posttest. Both parents and students revealed that participation in the program positively influenced students' self-esteem. In addition to the stated goals of this study, unanticipated impact of the program on students' musical experiences was also found.
