Developing Confidence within Girls through Self-Defense Education
Banks, Aaron L.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v25 n5 p26-29 May-Jun 2012
Through physical activity, physical educators have long sought to improve the self-efficacy and self-esteem in girls and young woman. Current research indicates that self-defense education may have a positive psychological impact on female participants, specifically regarding the development of self-efficacy and self-esteem. Through participation in a self-defense unit of instruction, females develop knowledge and skills related to personal preservation that allow an individual to live a confident and purposeful life. This article provides educators a useful tool to generate confidence within girls and young women through self-defense education.
