The Impact of Elementary Teachers' Perceptions and Practices to Promote Parental Involvement
Lattimore, Myra T.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Walden University
Parental involvement, defined as the educational engagement of parents in activities such as involvement in PTA, volunteering, and Science/Math night, promotes academic success. Lack of parental involvement is associated with lower academic performance. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine the relationship between parent involvement and teacher attitudes toward such involvement. Epstein's 6 typologies of parenting, communication, volunteering, learning at home, decision making, and collaborating with the community served as the theoretical basis for this study. Fifty eight elementary teachers completed a modified version of the School and Family Partnerships Survey for Teachers and Parents. The Pearson r was used to determine correlations between teacher attitudes and activities such as parenting, communicating, volunteering in the classroom, and attending evening meetings or performance. The Teacher's Importance of Parent Involvement Survey rated the participants' level of importance and was used to measure the correlation between teacher's perceptions and Epstein's 6 typologies. Results of this study indicated a statistically significant correlation, r (57) = 0.68, p < 0.001, between teachers' perceptions of parental involvement and their teaching practices to encourage and increase parental involvement. This study contributed to positive social change in the area of parent-teacher partnerships; the outcomes have shown that professional development is needed on ways to work efficiently with all parents to increase student academic achievement. The information will be disseminated via presentations at school district meetings, teachers' workshops, professional development, parental involvement workshops, and PTA meetings.
