Incorporating a Career Planning Lab into a Managerial Communications Course
May, Gary L.
Business Communication Quarterly, v68 n3 p345-357 2005
This article describes how a small business school, as part of a strategic planning initiative to improve career services, added a self-directed career planning lab to an existing managerial communication course. The lab concept and the learning design are innovative because they met a student need without creating additional time demands on the instructor or requiring additional resources from the school. After providing some background and making a brief case for the importance of career planning in the curriculum, the author describes the model developed for career planning, provides examples of the learning design, shares the results of student evaluations, and concludes with comments on the lessons learned from this curriculum initiative. (Contains 2 figures and 2 tables.)
