Adult Education in Multi-Ethnic Europe: A Handbook for Organisational Change. International Perspectives in Adult Education, No. 19.
Dadzie, Stella, Comp.
This is a handbook to assist European adult educators in teaching in a multicultural society, presenting models of intercultural practice for organizational and staff development in youth and adult education. Section 1 explains the document's purpose and use, discusses the objectives and major activities of the Learning to Live in a Multi-Cultural Society network, and defines key terms. Sections 2 and 3 are, respectively, a demographic and sociopolitical overview, and a structural and contextual overview, of migrants and ethnic minorities in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Sections 4-6 focus on practical ways of improving policy and practice and bringing about organizational change. Section 4 identifies three key areas for consideration by tutors and their organizations when planning and preparing courses to meet minority learners' needs. Section 5 considers three key areas for consideration once minority students have been recruited. Section 6 emphasizes the importance of supporting student progression once students have completed their course of learning and suggests ways of monitoring and evaluating provision and using the resultant information for forward planning and program revision. Among the items included in Sections 4-6 are case studies, good practice checklists, useful contact addresses, and further reading suggestions. (MN)
