Leader Perceptions of Ethical/Moral leadership in Community College Business School Curriculum
England, David Lee
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to identify the perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes of educational leadership toward implementation of ethical leadership in the taught curriculum. The need for skills in ethical/moral leadership has engendered renewed interest in development of ethical/moral reasoning. This movement has evolved into opportunities for educational leaders to take the initiative to influence the lives of future leaders. Individual interviews involving open-ended questions were conducted to identify key initiatives implemented by educational leaders in the development of ethical leadership instruction into the curriculum of community colleges. Participants included educational leaders consisting of chancellors, presidents, and vice presidents of curriculum in community college environments. The importance of this study of ethical/moral leadership instruction was based on the direct relationship across industries between failure and lack of ethical/moral leadership. Eight themes were identified that might lead to key initiatives for the development of ethical/moral training in the curriculum in higher education. The themes centered on the importance of ethical/moral leadership instruction in the curriculum, possible barriers to the training in the curriculum, and the effect on society of not having ethical/moral leaders. The knowledge gained from the study on the placement of ethical/moral learning in the curriculum, best practices for such instruction, and the stewardship responsibility of educators may be useful for educational leaders. Recommendations include implementing programs of ethical/moral development in business programs that include humanities and behavioral aspects affecting business decisions. Educational leaders might consider advocating an attitude of ethical and servant leadership toward students.
