Business Professionals Workplace Message Quality Perceptions
Roach, Joy L.; Anderson, Marcia A.
Delta Pi Epsilon Journal, v49 n3 p40-54 Fall 2007
In light of today's large amount of written workplace communication, this study attempted to reveal information regarding the quality in which business messages are encoded on the job. Data were gathered through a questionnaire administered to a sample of 1994-2004 MBA graduates of three AACSB-accredited programs. Findings suggest that business professionals are quite pleased overall with business message quality; however, some open-ended comments revealed disconcertment with peers' ability to write well. E-mails were shown to harbor the worst quality, followed by letters and memos for external and internal communication targets, respectively. Also, in both quality of message writing and information, external messages were statistically seen as better than internal. Recommendations for practice include ongoing concentration on writing skills and the importance of well-composed messages, notably internally. Recommendations for further research suggest a greater investigation of underlying reasons for rather suspect e-mail quality and quality-related target audience differences. (Contains 8 tables.)
