Creating Opportunities for College Access: Examining a School Model Designed to Prepare Students of Color for College
Farmer-Hinton, Raquel L.
Multicultural Perspectives, v10 n2 p73-81 Apr 2008
Drawing on data from a charter school case study, the author shares student and staff reflections on a college preparatory model for students of color. Through analyses of staff interview and student focus group transcripts, the author highlights key features of the school culture that helped students of color make their transition to college. The author also highlights staff members' challenges on implementing a college preparatory model for students of color. These findings suggest the importance of a clear college preparatory school mission, personalized college planning, and curriculum-based college enrichment activities. (Contains 2 notes.)
