Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v98 n4 p58-59 2006
This article discusses how civic engagement came alive in a Family and Consumer Social Issues class. College students are at a critical age to develop a lifelong interest in civic engagement. Students in a Family and Consumer Social Issues class were required to attend two meetings of a public board or agency of their choice. Their assignment was to observe the use of critical thinking skills, parliamentary procedure, consensus building, and public input. In reflection papers, students explained what they learned about civic engagement. After attending and upon reflection, they reported a clearer understanding of the importance of participating in civic activities.
