The Role of Quantity Implicatures in the Grammaticalization of "Would."
Ziegler, Debra
Language Sciences, v22 n1 p27-61 Jan 2000
Examines grammaticalization of English "would" over an extended period of time. Offers an analysis that accounts for evidence of both the first Gricean Maxim of Quantity (in which an unrestricted quantity of information is understood to have a restricted representation) and the second (which holds that a restricted quantity of information is extended to refer to a wider range of meanings than are actually expressed).(Author/VWL)
