Entrepreneurial Alliances: A Study of Entrepreneurship and Strategic Alliances in the Charter School Industry
Washington, Cheryl A.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study investigated the practices, processes, and success rates of 15 entrepreneurial alliances in the Texas charter school industry. The research involved interdisciplinary industries (business and education) and focused on how a specific type of alliance structure utilized social innovation to exploit opportunity and impact change in the Texas public school system. The researcher sought a deeper understanding of how entrepreneurs strategically formed alliances in the Texas charter school industry to pursue opportunity, mobilize resources, and respond to market failures caused by performance problems. A variety of modern day entrepreneurship practices (educational, social, strategic, public) were found to be at work in the Texas public charter school industry according to those that participated in this study. Qualitative data from multiple sources were collected, analyzed, converged and triangulated resulting in the development of 12 themes. Through participant interviews and a document review process, the researcher gathered authentic data to summarize and describe from a fundamental perspective how these entrepreneurial alliances conducted business. A summary of the investigation that describes the processes, practices and success rates of the 15 entrepreneurial pioneer organizations that took a risk to satisfy the social responsibility of business by reaching a targeted population of disengaged students is highlighted in this study. This new information may prove beneficial to educators, policy makers, parents, and public interest groups interested in change management and school improvement.
