Are There Badlands Ahead for Higher Education?
Pence, Harry E.
Journal of Educational Technology Systems, v37 n3 p319-325 2008-2009
Several publications, including "Navigating the Badlands" a book by Mary O'Hara-Devereux as well as a report by the National Research Council, suggest troubled times are ahead for society and possibly higher education. The latter report says that, "The impact of information technology on the university will likely be profound, rapid, and discontinuous," and predicts that "the evolutionary pace of information technology will not only continue for the foreseeable future but could well accelerate on a superexponential slope." This article will examine some of the evidence that suggests there are badlands ahead for higher education.
