Engineering Science--Raising Awareness of Engineering through Key Stage 3 (Age 11-14) Science
Mannion, Ken
Education in Science, n248 p20-21 Jun 2012
During 2011, a team from the Centre for Science Education (CSE) worked with four local schools and five Sheffield city region engineering organisations on a project to identify ways to increase the input into young people's awareness of engineering that comes from activities they do in school science. The project also tested an hypothesis that greater and longer term impact on young people's attitudes to science and engineering could be achieved through the use of interventions integrated into curriculum activities, rather than stand-alone or one-off activities. An important aspect of the project was to address the issues the project team had identified, in terms of how to design resources and activities that removed some of the barriers and stereotypes, such as the under-representation of girls, the lack of visibility of engineering in most science curricula, and the stereotypical images young people have of what engineers do.
