Children and Environment: A UNICEF Strategy for Sustainable Development. A UNICEF Policy Review.
United Nations Children's Fund, New York, NY.
This policy review discusses the impact of environmental degradation on the health and well-being of children and women. It analyzes ways in which environmental threats such as deforestation, atmospheric pollution, and global warming add to the environment of ill health, malnutrition and ignorance to perpetuate the cycle of poverty. The review also examines ways in which natural and manufactured disasters (caused by poverty and the wasteful consumption of the affluent) undermine the environment and development. It reviews environmental considerations of UNICEF-assisted programs and methods to strengthen them. Finally, the review makes recommendations for addressing environmental concerns, particularly those that sustain development and meet the needs of mothers and children. Specific recommendations concern country programming, development project evaluation, the process of strengthening environmental components in ongoing programs, and future recommendations. The review urges UNICEF to collaborate and coordinate with other agencies of the United Nations and with other donors and nongovernmental organizations. It is maintained that UNICEF should not only strengthen environmental components in country programs, but should also promote sustainable forms of development with other partners in development.
