Recasting Madrid and Its Characters in Munoz Molina's "Los misterios de Madrid"
Long, Sheri Spaine
Hispania, v92 n3 p488-496 Sep 2009
"Los misterios de Madrid" (1992) provides a burlesque novelistic portrayal of the changing capital city and its inhabitants in the early 1990s. Spanish writer Antonio Munoz Molina creates vignettes of Madrid's people and places while showing the capital as a destination for both foreign-born immigrants and provincial Spaniards alike. In transitional Madrid, there is an uneasy relationship created by the city's changing demography and debatable integration of its new citizens. The recent immigrants pose challenges to the traditional "madrileno" identity and the reinvention of Madrid. Through comic relief, Munoz Molina prods traditionalists to accept change, synthesize memories and recognize the new Madrid.
