Curriculum Design of Computer Graphics Programs: A Survey of Art/Design Programs at the University Level.
McKee, Richard Lee
This master's thesis reports the results of a survey submitted to over 30 colleges and universities that currently offer computer graphics courses or are in the planning stage of curriculum design. Intended to provide a profile of the computer graphics programs and insight into the process of curriculum design, the survey gathered data on program philosophy, program history, curriculum and program structure, faculty and staff, admission standards, and systems and hardware. U.S. schools for which data are reported include the New York School of Visual Arts, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Syracuse University, Carnegie-Mellon University, the University of Missouri-Columbia, and the University of Oregon. Information is also presented on the graphics situation in seven schools of art and design in England and in New Zealand technical institutions. The interdisciplinary nature of computer graphics is then described, together with the formation of computer centers at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie-Mellon University, and Ohio State University to research applications of new technology in all fields. A summary of the survey findings, including notes on the computer graphics situation in Canada and in Australia, conclude the report. A 23-item reference list is provided, and the survey instrument and a list of universities contacted are appended. (MES)
