Computer Controlled Test Systems. Introduction. A Course Based on the IEEE 488 Bus.
Herrmann, Eric J.
An introductory course in computer automated tests and measurement systems based on the International Test Instrument-Computer Interface Standard, the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)-488, is presented in this study guide. This course is designed to: (1) introduce the electronics engineering technician to the functional aspects of IEEE-488 based systems; (2) familiarize the technician with setup requirements for such systems; (3) enable the technician to understand test programs and write rudimentary test programs based on hands-on experience; and (4) develop in the technician a working background with IEEE-488 bus compatible equipment that will enable him/her to select instruments for rudimentary test systems. The material covers three main topics--hardware characteristics, software characteristics, and interface bus characteristics. Each weekly lesson for the 10-week course includes an overview and discussion of the lesson topic and laboratory exercises. Appended materials include solutions to the laboratory exercises, an 11-page reference list and bibliography, a suggested equipment list, a list of seven suggested readings from the bibliography, and both questions and solutions for a suggested final examination for the course.
