Teaching Talks: Presents for the New Year
Broderick, Patricia; Raymond, Allen
Teaching Pre K-8, v36 n4 p39-41 Jan 2006
The author presents three educational products for kids: (1) "Novel Perspectives" by Shelley Harwayne; (2) "Summarization in Any Subject--50 Techniques to Improve Student Learning" by Rick Wormelt; and (3) Voices Reading, the new comprehensive reading and character development program for Grades K-2 from Zaner-Bloser. "Novel Perspectives" carries a subtitle of "Writing mini-lessons inspired by the children in adult fiction." The book is a compilation of excerpts from some of Shelley's favorite novels, incorporated into minilessons to be shared with young writers. The books included are not suitable for reading by young children, but the selected passages are dynamite for curriculum integration. "Summarization in Any Subject" helps teachers to look at summarization as a teaching technique that can make their job easier while giving their students a real boost. Voices Reading provides a systematic character development integration and features six themes that occur at each of the three grade level namely: (a) identity awareness; (b) perspective taking; (c) conflict resolution; (d) social awareness; (e) love and friendship; and (f) freedom and democracy.
