Let's Get Moving!
Sherman, Karen; Collins, Brian; Donnelly, Kay
Teaching Pre K-8, v37 n6 p48-49 Mar 2007
Today's generation of American children may be the first to have a lower life expectancy than their parents. Childhood obesity has increased 35% in the past 10 years. Carrying excess weight for years can lead to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and premature death. For the first time, there are substantial numbers of children with Type 2 diabetes, a condition that normally develops in adults. It is educators' responsibility to encourage their students to eat healthy and exercise. Providing more opportunities to exercise will help children fight obesity, perform better academically and grow up to be healthy adults. In this article, the authors provide some fun activities to get students moving in the classroom: (1) Wake Up the Brain; (2) Math and Fitness; (3) Place Value Throwing; (4) Cue the Music; (5) Tunnel Relay; and (6) Scarf Juggling.
